WHAT’S ON IN AND AROUND PRESTON FROM 6th FEBRUARY |
|
Till 30th June 2012 |
Harris Museum and Art gallery 14 May 2011 - 30 June 2012 Global Threads: Asian Textiles & Fashion Today Over the last year young
people from Preston have been working as curators, researchers, designers and
stylists to create a fashion exhibition inspired by the museum’s collection. Global Threads is based on
a set of historic fabric samples called The Textile Manufactures of India.
This 18 volume set was given to Preston in 1866 and it includes 700 fabrics
from throughout South Asia. Many of the textile patterns, materials and
techniques in these books are still in use today. Global Threads brings
together historic South Asian textiles with contemporary fashion to reveal
that even the latest fashions reflect global textile culture. This
exhibition is part of Stories of the World, one of the projects at the heart
of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. |

Broughton and District
Club, Whittingham Lane The Club Players, Broughton present BUSYBODY by Jack Popplewell A
meddlesome cleaning woman keeps telling the cops how to mind their business
and who steps forward with the right evidence in every pinch. She lives in the basement of the office building she
cleans and one night finds a body. By the time the police arrive, there is no
body and no evidence. The wrong alarms are sent out, murdered men turn up
alive, and the whole thing is chalked up to the cleaning woman's imagination
until an unidentified body is discovered on a distant hill and the cleaning
woman uncovers more evidence in the course of her duties. Is the company
owner staging his own murder? Or did he kill his wife's lover? Is the lover a
firm employee or someone else? Where do the two female assistants fit in?
What is the wife withholding? A thousand laughs
and tingles will delight audiences young and old |

CONTINENTAL 2-00pm Integr8 Youth Dance Company present ‘Jigsaw’ – Free entry Integr8 Youth Dance Company were formed in
2004 and are made up of disabled and non-disabled dancers from across
Lancashire. The group are lead by Ludus Dance and supported by Sir Tom Finney
Community High School. The group have been invited to perform at many local
and regional evens including the Lancashire Youth Dance Festival, which they
have now taken part in consecutively for the last 3 years. Last year
Integr8 were lucky enough to be selected for the regional UDance platform at
The Lowry in Manchester where they also participated in workshops lead by
other professional companies. This current work has been devised with the support of the BBC
Performing Arts Fund. The fund has enabled Integr8 to work with disabled
choreographer Lisa Simpson over a 12 week period to devise a piece of work
using the Simpson Board. The Simpson Board was developed by Lisa and Adam
Benjamin as an accessible choreography tool for dancers with limited or no
verbal communication. It is also very valuable tool for all dancers as a
method of developing choreography skills and their practice. Lisa, who has
quadriplegic cerebral palsy and is a non verbal communicator herself, has
been introducing the group to The Simpson Board and developing choreography
skill with the group whilst devising a piece of dance for performance with
the whole Company. This piece is inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy and
has been devised collectively by Lisa and the group. |
